Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Each night during the Howl-O-Scream season, more than 350 Busch Gardens Williamsburg cast members suit up to scare at the theme parks popular Halloween extravaganza.

Theatrical experts unleash their creativity to produce more than 300 costumes for the Howl-O-Scream performers. The parks entertainment department features experts in creating looks to scare, shock and spook.

The parks Howl-O-Scream cast members begin their transformation into gypsies, menacing clowns, skeletons, pirates and vampires with a variety of makeup, creams, brushes and powders, said Linda Cuddihy, vice president of entertainment for Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA. Its amazing how believable the costumes become with the right makeup, added Cuddihy.

The average trick-or-treater and Halloween partygoer can easily adapt these makeup looks at home by following a few simple tips.

There are so many good products that general consumers can now purchase at costume and retail shops to help enhance a Halloween look, said Cuddihy. Products like barrier spray, teeth stains, and 3-D skin are easy to use and readily available.

All looks should begin by protecting skin with a clear barrier spray to prevent makeup from clogging pores and being absorbed into the face, added Cuddihy. To keep makeup from smearing, barrier spray should be applied again when the look is complete.

FRIGHTFUL FACES OF HALLOWEEN Gypsy: - Fill in eyebrows to add thickness by using an eyebrow pencil and short strokes, giving the appearance of hair. - Use bright colors of blush to color cheeks. - Apply and slightly smudge dark red lipstick to the lips to make lips appear fuller. - Add a beauty mark with a black eye pencil. - Heavily apply blue eye shadow to the eyes. - Apply bronzer or brown colored makeup to the hands and face to create a dirty look. Avoid looking streaky by using hands to rub the makeup onto the face. - Jewelry or blackened teeth can be added to accent the look. - Makeup overall should be a bit messy and overdone. - Hair should be teased and very messy.

Clown: - Spread a thin layer of white cream makeup over entire face, from hairline to neck, leaving areas around the eyes and mouth bare. - Use a black eye pencil to exaggerate eyes and brows. - Use red cream makeup or lipstick to create a wide clownish smile. - Be creative with colored cream makeup to personalize the clown look. To create a classic clown, feature geometric shapes and primary colors. - To change a clown look from fun to fiendish, choose one feature to exaggerate, such as mouth or eyes, and add blood and other oozing effects. - Attach a red nose using spirit gum, an adhesive. Be sure to put spirit gum on the face, not on the plastic nose, for more staying power.

Skeletons: - Spread a thin layer of white cream makeup over entire face and lips, from hairline to neck, leaving areas around the eyes and bottom of nose bare. - Outline the eye sockets and nose area with black eye pencil -- do not blend the edges. - Fill in the outlined areas with black cream makeup. - Use a black eye or lip pencil to draw teeth, starting with the front, over the mouth. - With black eye pencil, draw a line under the cheekbone. - Under that line, apply black cream and fade from dark to light toward the ears to create a shadow and hollow out the face.

Pirates: - Draw scars by using a brown makeup pencil. - For a more defined face, lightly color in the eye sockets with brown colored makeup. Then, apply the brown color to the bone below both eye sockets and use fingers to pull the color down to fade from dark to light. - Shade in the laugh lines and cheekbones using the same technique. - With a stipple (spongy) brush, add a beard using black or brown makeup depending on hair color (does not need to be a full beard). - Add smudges of the brown makeup for a dirty, roguish appearance. - Finish with optional eye patches, rotten teeth and gold jewelry.

Classic Vampire: - Spread a thin layer of bluish-white cream makeup over entire face, including ears, neck and hairline. - Create depth around they eye sockets and cheeks by drawing a dark gray line near each cheekbone. Use fingertips to fade the color from dark to light down the face. This will create a hollowed out and defined look. - For additional depth on the forehead and in the creases around the mouth, apply gray cream with a sponge and use small strokes to create lines. Blend the color to fade from dark to light out from the crease and down the face. - Draw lines under eyes with a red makeup pencil, following the under eye contours. - Add fake blood to corners of lips to mimic dripping, using red makeup gel or makeup pencil.

An important thing to remember is that Halloween makeup does not have to be perfect, said Cuddihy. In fact, when a feature if distorted, it lends an even scarier air to the overall effect. The creepy and crawly come out at night as Howl-O-Scream returns to haunt Busch Gardens Williamsburg Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24 through Oct. 31. Park hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., but the fiendish delights of Howl-O-Scream begin as the sun begins to set. For more information, guests may call (800) 343-7946 or visit howl-o-scream.com.
