Where does the fish you eat come from? In most international hotels and restaurants these days, fish is frozen for many days or is grown on a farm before we eat it. At Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel (www.martinhal.com), we guarantee that the seafood and fish we serve is fresh - right from the Atlantic Ocean which is just at our doorstep.
As Sagres is located in the Southwestern-most point on Continental Europe, the variety of fish and seafood available in this part of the Atlantic Ocean is much richer than anything in other European waters. At Martinhal Beach Resort and Hotel's As Dunas restaurant, we serve the fresh catch of the day, which regularly includes Bream, Bass, John Dory, Snapper, Red mullet, Scorpion Fish - the list goes on. The area is also famous for Oysters, Mussels, Clams, Limpets and the curious "Barnacles" or "Perceves" as the locals call them - these have to be caught off the dangerous rocks at the bottom of the West Coast cliffs and hence have immense gastronomic value.
Whether you eat at our As Dunas, or you wander out into the local area, restaurants will serve a selection of what is fresh - prepared in the simplest of Continental European methods - fish is normally simply grilled with salt and olive oil, and seafood is cooked with seawater, coriander, garlic and white wine! You might get a delicious side sauce with olive oil, roasted garlic and coriander to add to your fish. Prawns are tossed in olive oil and local "piri piri" (chili) oil with garlic. Delicious! Straight from the sea, onto your plate! What could be healthier and tastier?
Even with our meat and vegetarian dishes, our food philosophy is built upon sourcing as local as possible and using Portuguese ingredients where possible. Even the ice-cream we serve in our restaurants is locally made - food miles are always carefully thought through! We have a big commitment to the food that is served to our guests, big or little, and taste is always paramount. The extensive kid's menus we have with carefully prepared dishes are widely lauded as an outstanding commitment to serving even our children the freshest of food.
