Four New Underwater Adventures in Western Australia Plus Two New Cruises for 2016

Tourism Western Australia

Western Australia is home to 12,000 kilometres of coastline with some of the most spectacular beaches in the world from the palms and burnt red pindan earth surrounding Cable Beach to Lucky Bay, home to sunbathing kangaroos and the whitest sands in Australia. Western Australia's coastline is thought to be one of the most pristine in the world and now there are six new ways to see it, from a walk along the sea bed to a hands on cruise and flying above Ningaloo Reef.

The flying fish – whale sharks from above and below

Explore the World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef from above and below the water in Ocean Eco Adventure's new Flying Fish adventure. Get a sense of the vast scale and tropical beauty of the world's longest fringing reef in a microlight aircraft, which will see you join the spotter pilot soaring above the turquoise waters, searching for whale sharks, which can grow up to 18 metres long. You will then be transferred to a boat to join a snorkel safari for your chance to swim alongside these gentle giants as well as spotting rays, dolphins, dugongs and humpback whales in the underwater paradise of the Ningaloo. Whale sharks  are usually found in the crystal clear waters of Ningaloo from late March to early July. From $699 (£375) pp www.oceanecoadventures.com.au

Swim with giants – new humpback whale experience

From August 2016 visitors will be able to swim with another giant of the ocean - the humpback whale at World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef. The world's longest fringing reef has long been regarded as one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks and now the West Australian government has granted licenses for a select number of operators to offer humpback whale swimming experiences too. Western Australia's humpback whale population had steadily recovered since the end of commercial hunting of this species in Australia in 1963. It is now the largest population in the world, with an estimated 30,000 whales migrating along the coast each year.

All tours focus on small group whale encounters for intimate, yet exhilarating experiences with a maximum of five people in the water with any one humpback whale. Tours will run from August until October (whale sharks can be seen late March until July) and will start from $295 (£158) with Three Islands Whale Shark and Dive http://www.whalesharkdive.com/

Travelbag (travelbag.co.uk or 0871 402 1516) has a 12 night package to Western Australia from £1,079 per person including 6 nights in Perth and 6 along Australia's Coral Coast including Ningaloo Reef. Price include 3 star hotels, international flights and car hire.

Learn to Free Dive

Where best to learn the art of free diving, than the world's largest fringing reef, World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef. More than 500 types of tropical fish and 250 kinds of coral can be seen mere metres from the white sand beaches as well as turtles, reef sharks, dugongs, manta rays and dolphins. Sal Salis, a luxury eco camp nestled in the white sand dunes of Western Australia's Cape Range National Park, is now offering free dive lessons with their resident underwater photographer and videographer, Nat. Nat has learnt and worked alongside some of the best free divers in the world and has a personal best depth of 60 metres. Join her for a private lesson before staying in one of the new seven wilderness tents at Sal Salis which are positioned just metres from the Indian Ocean. The 100% solar powered camp blends eco credentials with luxury. Handmade jarrah beds are fitted with 500 thread count organic cotton sheets and a choice of pillows. An on-site chef provides contemporary Australian cuisine with hints of bush food and native produce all from a canvas kitchen. A 3 night all-inclusive package costs $4,950 (£2,653) per person covering accommodation, all meals and wine and guided activities including a whale shark or humpback whale swimming experience. www.salsalis.com.au

Take a walk under the Ocean

Enjoy the thrill of exploring the Indian Ocean and all its wonders, without the need for a dive course on the new Busselton Jetty Undersea Walk in Western Australia. A custom-made 'breathe-easy' SeaTREK helmet (worth a cool $20,000/£10,000!) is designed to let you breathe completely naturally underwater and 'walk' freely as you explore the wildlife around you and some of the southernmost coral in the world. Busselton Jetty Undersea Walk is one of the first seabed walks in the world to operate without a compressor or air hoses. Instead you wear a dive helmet and self-contained backpack so you can walk freely.

The Leeuwin Current brings a narrow band of warm water down the Western Australian coastline resulting in coral growth at a latitude of 33 degrees south, a remarkable phenomenon which brings tropical and sub-tropical species into Geographe Bay. The helmet walk will take you past a forest of vividly coloured corals, sponges and fish. Price is $165/£82 per person (must be 12 or older) http://www.divebusseltonjetty.com.au/undersea-walks.php
