In the Algarve the weather is fabulous all year round, the scenery is magical and there is always plenty to do – no matter what the time of year. Visitors to the region will also never go hungry! This year the Algarve has a whole host of events to tickle those taste buds and expand the palate to new levels.
The Algarve will be able to satisfy appetites for even the fussiest of eaters, with local events specializing in anything from cured ham in Monchique, Sea Food in Olhão and Sweet potatoes in Aljezur.
The destinations top pick of foodie fun to check out this year include:
Algarve Chefs Week 5.0: This unique event returns for its fifth year from 26 April – 3 May, and brings together 10 leading chefs from the Algarve's finest hotels to create unique celebratory menus inspired by five of the region's most distinctive ingredients: flor de sal (hand-harvested sea salt), dried figs, carob, fava beans and oranges. The event will also showcase regional wines and feature gastronomic workshops
Fine Wines & Food Fair 2015: The award winning luxury Vila Vita Parc is hosting once again it's renowned Fine Wines and Food Fair from the 6th – 10th May. Dozens of award-winning Portuguese and international chefs listed in the Michelin Guide, World´s 50 Best Restaurants and over 20 wine producers from around the world, will be welcomed back to the resort for five days of gastronomy delights. Host to the event is the resorts Ocean restaurant´s resident two Michelin star chef, Hans Neuner.
Grande Mostra de Vinhos Portugal: The Great Portugal Wine Show celebrates its seventh anniversary in Albufeira this year on 16 May. The show gets together the best wine tasters, wineries and wine experts in Portugal, in order to select the best wines of the year.
Sea Food festivals:Fresh and local is key when it comes to the Algarve's sea food. 1st May – 24th May will see the city of Tavira celebrating the wealth of sea food in the region with local restaurants participating with guest chef events and special menus for the event.
Later in the summer the Sea Food festival in Olhão (10th – 15th August) is celebrated as one of the biggest gastronomy festivals in the Algarve. Fresh seafood demonstrations, entertainment and live music every night make it an experience not to be missed!
Medieval Days at Castro Marim: Relive times gone by at the castle of Castro Marim at their medieval festival 27th – 30th August 2015. Visitors can watch on as kings and queens, knights, jesters, noblemen and ladies all take to parade through the streets. Accompanied by medieval music, street performers and traditional banquets there will be no shortage of entertainment for visitors. The area of Silves also goes back in time with their medieval fair 7th – 16th August. Exploring the golden age and how Moors and Christians lived in the Middle Ages.
Sardine festival, Portimão: The most famous sardine festival in the Algarve can be found in Portimão in August, when the sardines are at their best! Cooking demonstrations and the best of Portuguese wine are all on offer. Live entertainment, traditional craft stalls and a daily parade throughout the festival make it a must see during summer in the Algarve.
Winter time specials: The first Saturday in November sees a chestnut festival in Monchique, and visitors at this time of year can also enjoy the harvest of sweet potatoes at a celebration held over two weekends in Aljezur at the end of November and start of December.
