South Devon has long been known for its beautiful beaches, rolling countryside and picturesque villages. Slowly but surely however, this region where land meets sea is becoming a hotspot for food lovers, and Toad Hall Cottages www.toadhallcottages.co.uk have some fantastic properties throughout the region from which food enthusiasts can enjoy the area's restaurants, vineyards, quirky eateries and food festivals.
Much of South Devon's culinary success is down to the landscape – the fertile soil and clean, temperate waters produce some outstanding local meat, dairy produce, seafood and vegetables which supply the local restaurants, gastro pubs, and cafes. Fine dining favourites include 'The Seahorse' in Dartmouth or Masterchef winner Anton Piotrowski's Treby Arms in Ivybridge , or for outstanding seafood literally just off the boat try the beach side eateries Brittania at Beesands, Bigbury's Oyster Shack, or the Beach House at South Milton. There are also many great gastro pubs championing local produce such as the Maltsters at Tuckenhay, Sea Trout at Staverton, or Millbrook Inn at South Pool to name a few.
Food and wine enthusiasts can also enjoying sampling direct from the suppliers - Sharpham produces award winning English wines and cheeses from its idyllic setting on the banks of the River Dart near Totnes, and the public can enjoy tours of the vineyard and tastings thoughout the summer. Riverford Organic also began in Totnes and you can take a tour of the farm and eat at their Field Kitchen. And there are several local food festivals showcasing a range of local produce from champagne cider to chillies such as the The Kingsbridge Food and Music Festival (May 29th-31st), The South Devon Crab festival in August, and the Dartmouth Food Festival in October.
