Join the Spring Caribou Migration in Canada
Arctic Haven Wilderness Lodge is located on the path of the Qamaniruag Caribou Migration. The herd numbers over 300,000 and migrates past Arctic Haven Wlderness lodge twice a year. Two adventures will be offered with set dates of May 9 - 16th, and May 16 - 24th 2014.
In early May, the Qamanirjuaq caribou herd begins to gather and the call to reach their calving grounds 300 miles north drives them northward. The 300,000 plus herd is one of the healthiest herds in Canada. Big Lakes such as Ennadai are natural corridors for migration. Large numbers of Caribou walk past the lodge.
This arctic experience starts in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where a private plane flies you up to Arctic Haven Lodge on Ennadai Lake. The grand migration is described as life altering by the caribou biologists and those who have witnessed it in the past. Groups , who walk the paths and use snowmobiles to track the migratory routes over the week, regularly also see wolverine and arctic foxes who follow the Caribou.
Accommodation is at the Arctic Haven Lodge, a 'green' lodge that runs on solar and wind power, the only one of its kind in Nunavut, and making the lodge almost silent allowing local wildlife to venture closer. This 5000 square foot lodge features 12 rooms only , a communual dining room and lounge.
