New Adamsons Footsteps Safari, Kenya

Visitors to Kenya can now follow in the footsteps of one of Kenyas heroines, Joy Adamson, with a safari including Elsas Kopje and the new Joys Camp.

Joy was made famous by the film Born Free. She helped raise Elsa the lioness with her husband George in Meru National Park before moving to Shaba National Reserve to raise more animals. The 10 day Adamsons Footsteps safari takes in both of these areas where Joy lived and worked, including three nights at the new Joys Camp in Shaba, two nights at Elsas Kopje in Meru, three nights in the Masai Mara and a night in Nairobi.

Joys Camp is situated at Joy Adamsons original campsite in Shaba, a semi desert, rugged and hilly terrain with abundant springs. It was here that she wrote her final book, 'Queen of Shaba' about Penny the leopard. Joys Camp, which opened in July 06, is chic and stylish, with 10 spacious tents decorated with Bedouin Somali cloth. Each 100 sq meter tent includes a veranda with its own private deck, dressing area, bathroom and lounge. Activities include day and night game drives, bush walks and breakfasts, picnic lunches and cultural visits to local tribes. There are also a number of Joys artefacts on display.

From here you fly by private charter to Elsas Kopje in Meru National Park. Set on Mughwango Hill, blending into the rocky crags, the camp is close to the site of George Adamsons original campsite and is named after Elsa the lioness. The eight luxury en suite cottages are the ultimate rooms-with-a-view. Individually designed and crafted into the rock they incorporate the natural features of the hillside. There is also Elsas Private House, a separate two bedroom retreat with its own pool, perfect for families and privacy seekers.
