DETAILS: Since 1961, the John Wanamaker Athletic Award has been presented to “the athlete, team or organization that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel.” In honor of his break-out performance (28 goals and 65 assists for 93 points) during the 2011-12 season, Claude Giroux will receive this year's Wanamaker award.
The Robert P. Levy Community Service Award is presented to the “individual, business or organization that has done the most to contribute to the quality of life in Philadelphia through sports.” Paralyzed as a result of neck surgery in 1988, Jerry Segal has raised more than $10 million for Magee Rehabilitation with the Jerry Segal Classic.
Ed Snider becomes the fifth recipient of a Wanamaker Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1967, Snider brought an NHL franchise to Philadelphia when he founded the Flyers and was the driving force behind the construction of the Spectrum. A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, he created the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in recent years to bring the “the greatest game ever invented” to children who otherwise might never have the opportunity to play.
The City of Philadelphia's Parks & Recreation Department will also present its second annual Sports Volunteer of the Year Award to Joe and Roseann Kirlin, whose mission is to provide financial support that fosters participation in wheelchair sports for children in Philadelphia.
