The Fix and Make year-long program of workshops and talks has been released online and tickets are available for purchase. 

Fix and Make brings different people together to actively question our consumption of and relationship with objects. 

The program, set within a specially designed space at Hotel Hotel, combines practical, experimental and philosophical learning. Over the next 12 months there are 32 events with contributions from more than 60 local, national and international collaborators from fields as diverse as neuroscience, art, design and craft, food, education, music, psychology and the environment.

The program has been developed with workshops for all age groups and no previous experience or skills are required to get involved.

Program highlights include workshops where participants can learn how to make toys from household waste with the legendary Ted Talker Arvind Gupta from India, how to make long-life chopsticks with Canberra local designer Tom Skeehan and how to preserve and pickle with Monster kitchen and bar head chef Dan Flatt. 

Andy Marks, the Program Director of Fix and Make, says “Collectively through small acts of fixing and making, we can bring about positive change at individual, societal, economic and environmental levels.”

Bookings can be made online from today, with many free events in the program. Ticket prices for talks start at $15 (including a drink) and ticket prices for workshops start at $30. Concession tickets are available, and all materials and tools are provided.

The program begins this Saturday 7 November 2015 from 10am – 2pm with the Fix and Make Market, a free day of live-making at the Nishi Gallery in NewActon. Monster kitchen and bar are curating a local food market. This is an all-ages event.

Produce will be available for purchase as well as specially made food (Rainbow chard rolls from Močan & Green Grout, Bao from Monster kitchen and bar, house made sodas from Juniper bar, made to order chop tops from Palace Electric Cinema) to eat on site.

With full bellies, people can then meet some of the Fix and Make program collaborators including:

• Making instruments from rubbish with Dylan Martorell
• Whittling life long chopsticks with Tom Skeehan
• Making ad hoc camp furniture from branches with Dale Hardiman
• Setting up swarm traps (safe houses for bees!) with Many Many and Honeyfingers
• Sewing utility aprons from old jeans with fashion designer Suzan Dlouhy.

All Fix and Make program attendees are offered 15% off their stay at Hotel Hotel.

All workshops and talk event spaces are accessible. Fix and Make is supported by the ACT Government.
