Fitzroy Island Bounces Back after Cyclone Ita

Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island bounces back and is OPEN for business as normal from Monday 14th April

For the safety of guests and staff the island was evacuated last Thursday. A small team lead by resort owner Doug Gamble and General Manager Glen MacDonald, remained on the Island throughout the storm. Cyclone Ita passed over the island late on Saturday night and the resort team quickly cleared away fallen trees and debris left by high winds.

The five sea turtles living in the tanks at the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre were moved to a purpose built cyclone safe enclosure in a secure area. The turtles were moved back into the sea turtle centre on Sunday by our staff.

Glen MacDonald reported, “the conditions were extreme, guests were safely evacuated prior to Ita's arrival, we were lucky as no damage was sustained and are pleased to report within 24 hours it is back to business as usual, the seas are flat and calm, the suns out and we look forward to welcoming returning guests.”

Fitzroy Island remains a favourite playground for locals and visitors that seek an authentic natural island experience. Owner Doug Gamble is pleased to see visitors returning to enjoy the island's facilities. “It's good to see people enjoying the island,” he said “Our focus is on everything local – we stock Blue Sky beer, the fish on our menu is caught locally, we use local produce in our kitchens and we employ a lot of local staff.”
