September 20 will mark the opening of Indiana State Museum's “American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition” exhibit.
Simultaneously, Indianapolis is on the cusp of a massive distillery roll out due to a law passed in 2013 allowing already-licensed breweries and distilleries to begin distilling and serving to the public.
With Indy's powerful microbrewery scene, the push to change the ban against distilling and selling liquor by the glass, bottle or case to the general public was led by Indy-based Sun King Brewing, Three Floyds of Munster, IN, and the Indiana Brewers Guild.
Indy will welcome Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery, the city's first artisan distillery and tasting room in Fletcher Place, an eclectic neighborhood off-the-beaten path of downtown Indy, on September 15. Not only is it Indy's first, but it's one of the most unique distilleries in the U.S:
- First distillery in the country to be owned a service disabled combat veteran
- Commited to hiring 21 employees, as many as possible to be disabled veterans
- Owner: Former U.S. Marine Travis Barnes (31 yrs old), his wife, Hilary and three friends.
- Barnes was a part of the special operations re-con team involved in the initial invasion of Iraq. He suffered a traumatic brain injury. After returning, he graduated from law school in May 2013.
- The name is derived from the military phonetic alphabet
