Summer 2019 stays at La Grand' Ferme to include trip to Arromanches
A one-day excursion to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy has been added to the La Grand' Ferme programme this summer by Family Adventure Holidays (01273 803030; www.familyadventureholidays.com), a leading provider of family activity breaks in France.
La Grand' Ferme's location offers easy access to the sites at the centre of the D-Day Landings and an inspiring opportunity for children to find out more about this historic event that turned the tide of the Second World War.
“While many children will be learning about these key events at school, few will actually have the opportunity to visit these historic sites,” says FAH owner Nigel English. “As many of them are close to our Normandy properties, we thought adding a D-Day trip would be a great way to mark this anniversary year.”
The trip, which has been integrated into the week's busy activity programme, takes guests to spend a morning in Arromanches, a town at the heart of the events, and on the nearby beaches. There is also time to visit the Musée du Débarquement and 360-degree cinema, which shows unreleased footage gathered by war correspondents.
After a picnic lunch on the beach, the afternoon is spent visiting the Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument. This was one of the German defensive fortifications, where on 6 June 1944, the course of the war changed, when it was captured by Colonel Rudder's Rangers. Today the site demonstrates what an artillery battery was like, with its firing command post, casemates and shelters.
Meanwhile, Family Adventure Holidays has launched daily French sessions for eight- to 16-year-olds who wish to practise their language skills in a fun way at its second Normandy property, Château de la Baudonnière. The eight 45-minute language sessions – which cost just £55 per child in total – are led by native speakers and there's an opportunity to consolidate learning on a day trip with the rest of the guests.
Both holidays offer a similar programme, with a slight variation in activities, which can include cycling trips, canoeing, aeroball, archery, T-shirt-making, baking, and an on-site mini-farm. Family bonding opportunities include a superb Mont St Michel bay walk with a quicksands experience, an It's a Knockout tournament, disco, quiz and karaoke sessions. Many other activities specific to each centre are also included.
Price: Normandy La Grand' Ferme and Château de la Baudonnière, take place over the following weeks: 27 July, 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2019. Price from £490 per adult and £435 per child (six to 15 years), £170 (two to five years), under-twos free, for seven nights, including accommodation in a family room, meals (with wine/cider for adults) and all activities. There are various accommodation options available. This is a self-drive trip and international travel is not included.

Family Adventure Holidays offers adventure and activity holidays at great-value prices in locations on the Opal Coast and the French Med and in Normandy and the Ardèche. There are no hidden extras, and
some are offered on an all-inclusive basis. All breaks include a flexible programme of activities designed
for specific age groups combined with activities for the whole family. The holidays do not include international travel.
The company was founded in 2012 by Nigel English under the umbrella of Voyager School Travel (Class Tours Ltd), a leading operator in the school travel sector.
As parents of children across the age range, Nigel and his wife Lisa, who has since joined the business, have a true understanding of what makes a fantastic holiday for all the family. This is complemented by years of experience providing educational, activity and adventure holidays to schools, led by staff who are recruited for their engaging, encouraging and fun demeanour, to fit with the company ethos and high standards of safety. The intimate size of the venues ensures that the staff get to know all the families.
The incredibly low price of the holidays reflects the no-frills accommodation, with limited double beds available in certain centres. But no compromises are made on cleanliness, the excellent quality of food, prepared by French chefs, and the unrivalled activity packages led by talented animateurs and qualified sports coaches.
The holidays, based at five centres, include:
