Canters Deli is a place where a martini-crowd meets matzoh ball soup and the whos who gather. This April, the legendary Los Angeles landmark will expand across state lines into Las Vegas and open one of Hollywoods hippest hangouts at Treasure Island (TI). Canters at TI will feature genuine deli fare amid the renowned design of Jordan Mozer.
As the in place to be and be seen in Hollywood, when it opened in 1931 Canters quickly became a spot where high profile deals were made between producers, directors and agents. Its a mid-century, modern hangout for rock stars, actors, producers, bohemians and a colorful cross-section of Los Angelinos.
Treasure Island President Scott Sibella said, The new TI is the perfect fit for this famous, hip hangout. TI continues to evolve by creating new experiences for our visitors. Canters will add a special vibe and a new dimension to our dynamic restaurant choices.
Canters at TI will feature the famed corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, made-on-the-premises, slightly hot pickles, rich cheese blintzes, bean-and-barley and matzo ball soups and ruggelah from their European bakery.
The Chicago design team Jordan Mozer and Associates is reinventing the Las Vegas Canters in the spirit of the original ultra-modern Canters of 1953. Canters at TI will share many of the originals features, but with updated designs. Dozens of sculptors, artists and artisans are creating special one-of-a-kind seating, lighting and sculptures.
Seamless terrazzo floors and curvy stainless steel kitchen counters will be found throughout the new restaurant. The walls will be covered in bright glass tiles and colorful sculptures inspired by the glass wall hangings at the original delicatessen. The result will be a modern Canters restaurant and hangout for the new TI.
The Canters story began in the early 1900s. 1924 - In Jersey City, New Jersey, Ben Canter and his brothers opened Canters Brothers Restaurant. 1931 - The brothers moved the restaurant to Brooklyn Avenue in Los Angeles where they introduced 10 cent corned beef and pastrami sandwiches to very receptive Californians. 1948 - Ben Canter and his wife Jennie and their niece Selma moved the restaurant to Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles and renamed it Canters. 1953 - Canters moved down the street into a new, super-modern restaurant in the old Esquire Theater. Open 24 hours a day, the restaurant became a landmark and a symbol of Hollywood.
Today, Canters Deli continues to be a family-run business. Ben and Jeannies son, Alan Canter, and his three children Marc, Gary and Jacqueline, and Selmas daughter Terri, ensure the Canters name and success remain strong.
