Fall Colour Thrills in Michigan

Pure Michigan

The US state of Michigan has some of the most vibrant Autumn colours in the Mid West of America with over 100 varieties of trees dappling 10 million acres of public woods with reds, oranges and golds. The panoramic lake scenery provides a wonderful back drop to many outdoor adventures at this time of year, such as biking, hiking, kayaking, fishing and scenic drives.

 Biking

Michigan has over 1,300miles of top-rated trails ranging from family-friendly paths to technical downhill dashes.  Boyne Mountain Resort and Boyne Highlands Resort are sister-properties that are open all year-round.  Ride the ski lifts and then fly downhill. Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls has 16 new trails of varying difficulties and a 7-mile paved path for all ages. Boyne Highlands resort in Harbor Springs has dozens of miles of cross-country terrain, downhill trails and a skills park.

 Hiking

The Lighthouse Trail in Ludington State Park takes you through woods and over sand dunes , some grassy and others rolling. As you approach Lake Michigan, the trail passes inter-dunal  ponds before ending at the Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The 1867 lighthouse is open for tours until late October. Learn about its history before climbing the tower's 130 steps for a 360 degree view of the undeveloped shoreline.

 Golfing

Treetops Resort in Gaylord, in Northern Michigan, has five top tier courses, including one of the top Par-3 courses in the U.S. Each round is like a nature tour with paths through the woods, fairways framed by hardwoods and evergreens and lots of elevation changes.

 Fishing

Lake Huron offers some of the best walleye and lake trout fishing in the world and there are several boat charter companies that offer fishing trips for novices and enthusiasts during Autumn.

  Scenic Drives

The West Michigan Pike encompasses some of Michigan's loveliest scenery as it passes through beach towns like St. JosephSouth HavenHollandGrand Haven and Muskegon. It ends at Silver Lake State Park, the heart of Michigan's fruit belt, scattered with roadside farm stands selling autumn's fresh-picked apples, pears, squash and pumpkin.

 Note to Editors:

The State of Michigan is a state blessed with the riches of unspoiled nature: the longest freshwater coastline in the United States, lakes that feel like oceans, shimmering beaches, miles and miles of cherry orchards, glorious sunrises and sunsets, daytime skies of the deepest blue, nighttime skies scattered with stars.

Home to more than 100 public beaches, some of the highest freshwater sand dunes in the world, stunning multi-colored sandstone cliffs, two National Lakeshores and the only national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron. More than 129 lighthouses, numerous maritime museums, ten shipwreck-diving preserves and historic military fortifications rim Michigan's Great Lakes shoreline.

Lakes, campgrounds, wildlife refuges and 103 Michigan state parks and recreation areas create a wide variety of recreational pursuits. Rivers for water sports, and thousands of miles of hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails thread their way among some 100 species of trees. Long days, relaxing weather and more than 650 pristine Michigan courses make for the perfect tee time. Because being able to play all day is Pure Michigan.
