Exploring the Backbone of the World: Montana's Glacier National Park

Montana

Glacier Country, Montana—By any name and from any view, Glacier National Park has a dramatic presence. Located in Western Montana and encompassing more than one million acres that include glacial-carved terrain, high mountain valleys, stunning 400-foot waterfalls and striking rock faces, it's unlike any place on earth.

While it has the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48 states, Glacier National Park is surprisingly easy to explore by road, trail or boat, with the most notable route being the Going-to-the-Sun Road—an engineering marvel and National Historic Landmark.

The 50-mile-long road takes visitors through the heart of the park from St. Mary to West Glacier, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Also along its route—plentiful hiking trails, pullouts and stunning vista points. And with the road open in its entirety during the summer months (typically mid-June to mid-September), Glacier National Park welcomes a vast majority of its visitors in July and August.

In addition to driving the famed road, the park also provides a diverse selection of activities and attractions that include red bus tours, interpretive Blackfeet tours, 734 miles of hiking trails, two backcountry chalet, historic lodges, guided boat tours and trail rides. Other popular activities: ranger-led excursions and the park's Native America Speaks program.

And while summer is the busiest season, Glacier National Park is open year-round and has distinct shoulder seasons. Spring provides hikers and bikers early access to the Going-to-the-Sun Road before it opens in its entirety to vehicular traffic, while autumn offers a peaceful—and colorful—visit to the park. And in winter, Glacier is prime for snowshoeing, ice climbing, cross-country skiing and sightseeing.
