The Murray River canoe trails are the latest experience encouraging more visitors to try the river from a surf ski, kayak, canoe or stand up paddleboard. Accessed through Barmah National Park on the Victorian side of the Murray River which delineates the border between two states, the canoe trails offer a pleasant way to experience one of Australia's icons meandering through the New South Wales' Murray Valley National Park and Victoria's Barmah National Park.

The section of the river near Barmah is ideally placed to provide a safe paddling experience that stretches rather uniquely from the river into the nearby lakes. There are four trails offering diverse experiences from the flowing water of the river to a still, easy ride on Barmah Lake.

Think of the experience as like bushwalking on water. A nice steady pace with plenty of time to take in the magnificent birds, animals and of course the mighty river red gums.

GPS-enabled downloadable maps are available to help you find your way which can be downloaded prior to visiting.

Part of the River Red Gum Tourism Action Plan, the trails have been developed by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service in partnership with Parks Victoria, Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation and Murray Regional Tourism.

The canoe trails are a great experience for families and all generations, the diversity of the trails provide something everyone can enjoy.

There is a variety of accommodation on both sides of the river catering to every taste, as well as tour operators who can hire canoes and shuttle paddlers back to their car. An ideal family holiday that many are embracing.
