Early Portuguese sailors on sighting Barbados called it 'Los Barbados' (the bearded one) because the proliferation of giant fig trees which fringed the beaches looked like giants with beards. And, what a discovery it was ! Arguably one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean combining sophistication with rusticity.
Ramblers Worldwide Holidays – the experts in guided walking adventures across the globe – is offering a 12 day guided walking holiday to Barbados exploring inland villages, rugged coastlines, fabulous beaches and the opportunity of savouring great West Indian speciality dishes and a variety of rums at one of the islands 1200 'tippling houses'.
The west coast (often referred to as the Platinum coast) has some of the most upmarket restaurants and hotels in the world whilst the wild east coast at Cattlewash and Bethsheba is a rustic untainted paradise with its spectacular Atlantic rollers and awe-inspiring sunrises.
Highlights include exploring the islands fascinating heritage with visits to plantation houses, museums, signal stations and distilleries; a glass-bottomed boat ride and snorkel with views of coral reefs and turtles; a visit to the islands internationally renowned botanical gardens; a 'Friday night fish fry' at Oisten's Bay and bustling Bridgetown which apart from its fort and museum is a great base for shopping and chilling out.
