Home to an abundance of winding coastal paths, alpine peaks and rugged coves, the varied landscape and dramatic scenery of the Balearic Islands make them a prime hiking destination. The autumn months are an ideal time to enjoy a hiking holiday in the islands thanks to pleasant autumn weather with temperatures in the early 20s and quieter footpaths. Here are four of the best hiking trails to enjoy in Ibiza, Mallorca, Formentera and Menorca:
GR 221 Ruta de Pedra en Sec, Mallorca
Mallorca is a paradise for hikers with its wide network of trails, stunning scenery and the rugged Serra Tramuntana mountain range. The Ruta de Pedra Sec is a six day long-distance hike across the Serra Tramuntana mountain range perfect for experienced hikers looking for an adventurous holiday. The 162km trail follows the Mallorcan coastline across the most beautiful part of the mountain range, offering a great variety of landscapes, high mountains, panoramic views of the ocean and overnight stops in rural fishing villages. The trail is well signposted and hiking refuges have been installed across the length of the trek to enable multi-day hiking.

Cala Galdana: Cami de Cavalls to Virgin Beaches, Menorca
Menorca is criss-crossed by a myriad of hidden footpaths and cliff-top tracks overhanging beach coves best discovered by foot. The island's beauty can be enjoyed with easy walks for the casual holiday stroller and longer treks for more seasoned walkers. The Cami de Cavalls to the Virgin Beaches walk starts in Cala Galdana on the east coast of Menorca and continues westward along the Cami de Cavalls trail – an ancient footpath that circles the whole of the island. The walk winds its way across stunning coastlines with panoramic views of the ocean where hikers can visit several of the island's most attractive Virgin Beaches such as Cala Macarella. Cap Martinet – S'Estanyol, Ibiza
Home to an abundance of cliff top walks, countryside trails and quaint villages, Ibiza is a great option for those who enjoy discovering destinations by foot. From casual rambles to serious treks, the island boasts a variety of well signposted trails perfect for all fitness levels. The port of Ibiza circular route is an easy 13 km rural walk, ideal for first time hikers. Starting at the Port of Ibiza, the trail continues to the pretty bay of Talamanca – a great spot for an ice-cream break and a dip in the Mediterranean Ocean. The route the continues to Cas Corredor – a passage on a slight incline over-hanging hidden groves and magnificent sea views.

La Savina – Estanys – San Francesc Circular, Formentera
'Ibiza's little sister', Formentera, offers rich and varied opportunities for walking whether strolling over magnificent cliff tops, walking through the peaceful countryside or hiking to the Balearic Islands' most southern point, Cap Barberia. The La Savina-Estanys-San Francesc circular route is a lovely 14km hike starting in the Port of Savina which winds around the Estany de Peix where hikers can visit the ruins of a Civil War prison. Hikers will amble through timeless countryside with restored windmills looking over the capital city of San Francesc before heading north to Estany-Prudent - the largest of Formentera's salt lagoons. The entire walk lasts about four and a half hours.
