13 days RV adventure in summer 2021 with First Class Holidays from £2177pp
Yukon is the land of the Midnight Sun, where skies are glorious and summer light is an endless twilight. Situated in the upper Northwest corner of Canada, next to Alaska, the Yukon is Canada's most accessible northern destination and is 80% pristine wilderness. The Midnight Sun reaches its peak over the Yukon on summer solstice (20 June) bringing with it 24 hours of daylight with the best time to visit between May and August. Life flourishes under hours of intense sunlight as the land hosts millions of migratory birds and explodes in wildflower blooms.
The sun does not set at the Arctic Circle and the further north one travels, the higher the sun and the longer the season of the midnight sun. Up above the Arctic Circle, the sun truly does not set for weeks.
The Yukon is one of North America's most undiscovered destinations; close to 80 percent remains pristine wilderness with 5,000-metre peaks, forested valleys, unspoiled waters and untamed wildlife. Roughly the size of Spain at just over 300,000 square miles, the Yukon is home to more than 160,000 caribou, 70,000 moose, 22,000 mountain sheep, 7,000 grizzly bears, 10,000 black bears and 250 species of birds, with a human population of only 40,000.
Visitors to the Yukon can hire an RV next summer and follow the Summertime Grand Tour itinerary:
Day 1 – Road Trip Around the Yukon
Pick up RV or car rental in Whitehorse, load up with provisions, find travel and road information at the Yukon Visitor Information Centre, and hit the highway.
Days 2-3 – North to the Klondike
Spend a couple of days winding up the North Klondike Highway along the route of Gold Rush stampeders. Explore roadside historic sites, visit cultural centres in Carmacks and Pelly Crossing, and enjoy quiet campgrounds in the boreal forest. Enjoy the hikes and heritage of the Silver Trail.
Days 4-6 – Discover Dawson and Beyond
Stroll the boardwalk-lined streets of Dawson City and learn about the Klondike Gold Rush. Drive up Bonanza Creek Road to Dredge #4, and enjoy a hike on the Ridge Road Heritage Trail. Read about Jack London and Pierre Berton. Spend a day visiting Tombstone Territorial Park. Take the free ferry across the Yukon River and continue on the scenic Top of the World Highway to Tok, Alaska.
Days 7-9 – Explore the Kluane Mountain Range
Return to the Yukon on the historic Alaska Highway and re-enter Canada at Beaver Creek. This is Kluane Country, one of North America's wildest, most scenic regions. Watch for grizzly bears, moose and Dall sheep. Visit attractions in Burwash Landing, Haines Junction and at Sheep Mountain and enjoy the region's beautiful campgrounds. Fill your days with wildlife viewing, walks and cultural experiences.
Days 10-12 – Southern Lakes Circuit
Head out to Haines Junction for a day of hiking and sightseeing in the Kluane region.
From Whitehorse, it's an easy circuit around the Southern Lakes to visit Carcross, Tagish, Teslin and Marsh Lake. Meet local artists, learn about the Inland Tlingit and Tagish First Nation people, and enjoy the interlaced glacier-fed lakes that form the Yukon River headwaters.
