Experience The Reindeer Migration In Arctic Norway On A Brand New Tour With Taber Holidays

Scandinavia Only

Embark on an incredible journey to Arctic Norway this summer and get up close to hundreds of migrating reindeer on a very special new tour from Taber Holidays.  Offered exclusively, the four-night break includes a day's hike to the historic fishing island of Uløya, where the wild reindeer can be found grazing on its lush vegetation.

Based in Olderdalen, just 5km south of Uløya, guests will stay at the spectacular Lyngen Lodge. Situated in secluded woodland overlooking the beautiful snow-capped Lyngen Alps and crystal clear waters of the Lygnenfjord, the lodge provides luxury accommodation with top quality cuisine.

Guests will enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast before embarking on the fully guided reindeer hike. The island is reached by a short boat crossing over the fjord, and as well as being home to the reindeer from May to September, has 35 permanent residents who eek out their living from the ancient practice of drying and preserving Stock Fish.

After leaving the fishing harbour and meandering through carved paths of birch tree forests, the forest begins to thin and the open mountain is reached where the entire Lyngen National Park and Lyngenfjord come into view. From here it is possible to see over 60 mountain summits, numerous glaciers and a dozen islands flowing out towards the open sea towards distant Greenland.

After a further two hours of hiking through ever-changing scenery, the upper plateau of Uløya island is reached. It is here that the reindeer are found cooling themselves on the remaining snow patches, enjoying an undisturbed summer free from insects, wolves and wolverines.

Guests on Taber's 'Arctic Reindeer Migration' tour can also enjoy two days at leisure. A self-guided hike to Lyngen National Park viewpoint is suggested for those who want to see more of the breathtaking scenery, or for those who wish to simply unwind, perhaps a soak in the lodge's outdoor hot tub.

The four-night 'Arctic Reindeer Migration' tour costs from £1,645pp and includes flights from London Heathrow to Tromsø, car hire with unlimited mileage, accommodation at Lyngen Lodge, all meals and a guided day's hike to Uløya. Based on two sharing. Departs Thursdays from 5 June to the end of September. An extra night is possible in Tromsø,

Note to Editor: The migration of the Nordic reindeer is divided into two seasons, summer and winter. During early May thousands of reindeer are rounded up by the Sami (indigenous people of Scandinavia) and funnelled in one single valley in the Reisa region of Northern Troms, where they are distributed to the outer laying coastal islands of Northern Norway, including Uløya. After spending the summer months here, they then swim back to the mainland during September and, together with their Sami herders, begin their arduous winter migration back to the inland plateaus towards Finland.

Taber Holidays is the UK's leading tour operator dedicated to travel to Scandinavia. They feature an extensive portfolio of summer and winter holidays including Northern Lights breaks, active and wildlife holidays, city breaks and classic sightseeing trips. These include both self-guided and escorted tours and a range of accommodation options from self-catering cottages in Iceland to an overnight stay in Sweden's Icehotel. Their itineraries cover Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland and The Faroe Islands.
