Sun International’s Table Bay Hotel, well-known for its Fynbos Cooking Package, now offers two new alternative packages to see Fynbos growing in its natural habitat and a five-course Fynbos tasting menu. The two new walking trail packages are much closer to the hotel, than the previous package, and offer either an easy walk along the spine of Signal Hill or a more energetic hike along the lower slopes of Table Mountain.
The first walk is a relaxed stroll from Lions Head to Signal Hill enjoying expansive views of the Atlantic coastline, Robben Island, the beautiful city bowl and majestic Table Mountain. This walk allows one to experience a variety of fynbos plants including Proteas, wild sage, tall watsonia and the renowned pelargonium, and in season the impressive chincherinchee. These are only a few fynbos species you will encounter en route and there are many more to discover. Learn about the variety of species and some of their medicinal uses and stumble on a little piece of history at the Karamat (Muslim Shrine) of Sheikh Mohammed Hassen Ghaibie Shah.
An alternative route is a moderately difficult hike up to Cecilia Waterfall through forest and fynbos, south of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. You will enjoy views of False Bay and all the way to the winelands and Hottentots Holland Mountains. You’ll discover unique large tree-Proteas, such as the Silvertree, the pincushion-Protea and the Waboom. Asteraceous daisies grow in abundance plus a variety of fynbos plants including mountain dahlias and the mildly scented pelargonium. In February and March you may also spot the elusive red Disa, a member of the orchid family, prized for its spectacularly beautiful flowers.
Enjoy a break at Cecilia Waterfall before the hike down to the contour path where an easy stroll takes you into the glorious Kirstenbosch gardens. You will visit the handy plants section to learn more about the uses of fynbos and their unique qualities.
The hotel offers a Half Day Cooking with Fynbos Package or a Full Day Package . The Half Day Package includes a welcome drink infused with Fynbos - the choice of infusions range from Buchu Lemonade, Lemon Pelargonium Iced Tea, Rooibos Mojito, Sour Fig and Mint Cordial to Wild Dagga Tea. An assortment of canapés accompanies the welcome drink. Guests are given a short introduction to Fynbos by Chef Jocelyn Myers-Adams and this is then followed by a five-course tasting menu. Each guest also receives a Fynbos gift.
The Full Day Package includes either one of the walking trails, a welcome Fynbos infusion and canapés followed by a five-course tasting menu by Chef Myers-Adams. There are five different tasting menu’s to choose from. The second tasting menu offers a starter of ceviche style sea bass with a buchu and lime dressing, a second course of pea and geranium risotto with vanilla mascarpone cheese, a main course of grilled springbok loin with butternut puree, sautéed bok choy and baked sour figs and juniper jus.
