For a truly magical Christmas, head to Liguria this December. From Christmas markets to light up nativity scenes, traditional festivities are aplenty on the Italian Riviera, a perfect setting for a last minute Christmas escape.
Manarola Nativity Scene
From the 8th of December 17,000 light bulbs and reclaimed materials make up the 300 life sized figures that light up the entire hill in the village of Manarola, creating the world's largest light-up nativity scene. The tradition began in 1961, when former railway worker Mario Andreoli started to construct this luminous spectacle, which leaves visitors astounded. Andreoli still plays his part in the tradition, in charge of switching on the installation's lights every year at the opening ceremony that promises to wow even further with a firework display that illuminates the sky. The nativity can be seen until the end of January, allowing plenty of time for travellers to take in this unique Christmas celebration.
Underwater Christmas in Tellaro
Every year at the edge of the Gulf of La Spezia, the small seaside village of Tellaro plays host to the Underwater Christmas, one of the most beautiful religious traditions in Liguria. On Christmas Eve the entire village becomes a sea of lights to celebrate the birth of Jesus in a unique and picuresque local festival. At midnight, scuba divers emerge from the sea with a statue of Baby Jesus, who is carried to an impressive manger surrounded by a stunning display of over 8,000 candles. Spectators are in for a real treat with the festive firework display that takes place over the sea.
Genoa Christmas Market – Mercatino di San Nicola
From the 2nd to the 23rd of December, Genoa's historic centre - the Piazza Sarzano - makes a dramatic transformation into a medieval village, with hundreds of artisans and craftsmen in traditional medieval dress showcasing ancient crafts to visitors. Children will love visiting the farm, which offers petting opportunities with donkeys and cows. Foodies can indulge in the local produce, with local gems available to try and buy including Ligurian wine, cheese and meats – and a visit isn't complete without a taste of Pandolce Genovese, a star of the Ligurian table during Christmas time. Entertainment ranges from jugglers to shows on a central stage and the medieval storytelling will leave you truly enchanted with the magic of Christmas in Liguria.
