The call of the wild will thrill visitors on an exclusive weekend to experience Exmoors iconic stags clashing in fierce combat during the annual red deer rut. The all-inclusive weekend break runs from October 16 - 18 and costs just 225 per person. Supported by the Exmoor National Park Authority and the National Trust, this is the only organised weekend of its type on Exmoor.
As well as opportunities to catch the deer rut at dusk and dawn, the weekend includes two nights quality bed and breakfast and a four course Exmoor supper, with an illustrated talk about red deer. Other activities included in the price are a jeep safari to explore the moors secret places and an owl flying display at the Exmoor Falconry Centre. Urged by ancient instincts, the majestic creatures fight to win female companions, and their primeval bellows resonate across the stunning moorland.
Nigel Hester, Countryside Manager for the National Trust, said, Red deer are Britains largest land mammals and the weekend gives visitors the rare chance to witness this conflict at close quarters. It is an awesome natural phenomenon and an experience that people never forget. Nigel added, Our experienced guides know the terrain and understand the behaviour of stags. They will ensure that people can watch this amazing event in safety, and without disturbing the animals.
Denise Sage, event organiser, said, We do our best to keep costs down so its great value. The moors are beautiful at this time of the year and witnessing the red deer rut is a once in a lifetime experience. Guests need to be able to walk a minimum of three miles. Bookings can be made through Porlock Visitor Centre on 01643 863150 or by email porlockCI@somerset.gov.uk.
