For Finns the quintessential ingredients of summer are a holiday cottage – preferably lakeside – a sauna, rowing boat and bicycle. For some the cottage provides the ideal secluded wilderness retreat, while for others it’s a base for more active pursuits.
The almost endless summer days mean the days are long and lazy. Even in Helsinki in the south the daylight hours stretch with the sun shining until 11pm and twilight just lasting a few hours from midnight till 4am. Whereas in Lapland in the north the sun doesn’t set for almost two months casting a golden glow over the stunning scenery of lakes and forests.
Here is a selection of accommodation available for rent this summer.
Birdsong Cabin
The romantically named Birdsong Cabin sleeps six in two bedrooms and is perched right on the shore of Poikkijärvi Lake in Kuhmoinen in the region of the Southern Lakes.
This beautiful cottage has excellent amenities and a stunning setting. The cottage is spacious and offers comfortable accommodation and a perfect spot for swimming, boating, walking, cycling berry-picking and enjoying a relaxing meal on the outside terrace.
The price for a three night stay in June in the cabin is from €428 rising to €930 for a seven night stay in June.

For those looking for a holiday in the lap of luxury whilst enjoying stunning scenery, seclusion and the glimpse into a celebrity lifestyle what about a private island experience? Villa Fregatti on Aateli Island located in beautiful Lake Nuasjärvi, 600km north of Helsinki offers three bedrooms, a sauna, whirlpool, home entertainment system and for chillier nights a heated, glazed in terrace perfect for those long light nights! The island’s own ships, Princess Vilma and General Jermu take residents to and from the island and can also be used as extra guest accommodation or for activities such as fishing, surfing and other watersports.
