Escape to Orpheus – A Secluded Island Hideaway in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef

Orpheus

Orpheus, set in the heart of the world's natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef, has reopened its doors for 2014 (following the wet season), and continues to offer guests the ultimate in tropical island escapism.

Just 80 kilometres north of Townsville (accessed by helicopter from Cairns or Townsville), the island stretches across 11 kilometres of immaculate turquoise coastline, and comprises of a pristine National Park and surrounding World Heritage-listed Marine Park. The fringing reef surrounding Orpheus is one of the Great Barrier Reef's most spectacular and diverse and it's not uncommon for guests to sight Green Turtles, Manta Rays and Humpback Whales.

In addition to its natural surrounds, the island has established a name for itself in the culinary world. Resident Head Chef Arie Prabowo (ex-The Botanical, Victoria), trained under Cheong Liew, offers guests a daily-changing menu that celebrates local and in-season produce through fusion cuisine. With a strong focus on sustainability, the island's veggie patch provides the kitchen with a constant supply of fresh ingredients, and the resident chickens lay fresh free-range eggs for guest meals.

In September 2013, Orpheus hosted food legend Maggie Beer for its second annual 'Foodie Revolution Series'. Over a weekend guests were treated to a collection of masterclasses and intimate dinners. Taking place once a year, the 2014 event will be announced shortly.

Orpheus also houses an impressive wine collection that features both iconic and boutique wines from the country's most renowned wine regions. The wine list was awarded 'a goblet' in the Gourmet Traveller WINE 'Australia's Wine List of the Year Awards' in 2012 and 2013.

Accommodating just 28 indulged guests (14 rooms) at any one time, the island channels a laid-back beach house vibe. Orpheus is also one of the only islands in Queensland that can be booked for exclusive use, providing the perfect backdrop to host an intimate wedding, a corporate retreat, a memorable milestone or a major celebration.

Showcasing a plethora of once in a lifetime experiences, Orpheus' principal dive sites boast 1,100 of the 1,500 species of fish on the reef; the local waters are a fisherman's playground and home to the most sought after reef fish species in the world; and guests can take the helm of a dingy packed with a gourmet picnic hamper and discover the many pristine coves that fringe Orpheus. The island also offers a signature dining experience, 'Dining with the Tides', which gives guests the unique opportunity to enjoy an intimate dinner served under the stars on the island's pier.

A welcome addition to the lodge is the Gwandalan Day Spa. 'Gwandalan' meaning 'rest and peace' in the Aboriginal language.  Using the LI'TYA [le-dee-ah] spa product range, the unique collection of spa treatments are inspired by traditional Aboriginal techniques and aim to restore and balance wellness through herbalism, aromatherapy and touch therapy.

The North Wing accommodation combines 'tropical sanctuary' with a 'contemporary minimalist' island aesthetic with private terraces that boast idyllic island views, languid sea breezes and serene sunsets. Currently under renovation is the island's South Suites, which will be unveiled mid June 2014. Ideal for honeymoon couples, these suites have been designed by Port Douglas-based architectural company Hunt Design and will feature a lush tropical garden setting, outdoor stone baths, bathrooms with double vanities, and private courtyards with hanging day beds.

Accommodation rates start from $1400 (twin-share) per night and include all gourmet meals, regional wines and beers, and daily Orpheus experiences. Flight time is approximately 3 hours from Sydney, 3.5 hours from Melbourne and 2.5 hours from Brisbane.
