'Inspector Montalbano' might be the ideal television series to watch at Christmas but why not skip the small screen and immerse yourself in the real setting. Adagio (01707 386700, www.adagio.co.uk), the experts in “gentle walking” small group, guided holidays on foot, offers a 7-night 'Montalbano's Sicily' holiday with a departure on 22nd December 2016.
Based in the region of Ragusa, an area typified by dramatic coastal scenery, steep hillside villages, fascinating archaeological sites, imposing baroque architecture and delicious Sicilian cuisine, the trip not only touches on elements which may feel familiar from the series but delves deeper into this much overlooked region of South Eastern Sicily.
A highlight in itself is staying in the region's UNESCO World Heritage listed city of two parts – the old town of Ragusa Ibla and the newer Ragusa Superiore - where one gets the perfect introduction to Baroque architecture given the city was largely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1693. Outside the provincial capital, the picturesque Baroque town of Noto with its enticing vineyards and a countryside walk around the stunning hilltop town of ChiaramonteGulfi and Mount Etna provide more insights into the seismic activity that has literally shaped the area.
In addition to days spent exploring the Greek archaeological site of Syracuse, walking in the Cava Ispica gorge and visiting the coastal resorts of Donnalucata or Punta Secca (home of the fictional Inspector Montalbano), food is also very much on the agenda with the opportunity to try some of the regions and Inspector Montalbano's favourite dishes, such as arancini, pasta incaciata and A stemperata, all washed down with some fine local Sicilian wine.
Adagio (01707 386700, www.adagio.co.uk) offer a seven night Montalbano's Sicily holiday departing on 22nd December 2016, from £1,475/person including flights, half board accommodation with dinners taken at local restaurants, local guides, all local transport costs and entrance fees.
