Opening at the Dulwich Picture Gallery on November 1st 'From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia' is a retrospective of one of BC's most celebrated artists. The exhibition will feature more than 80 works of art including a focused selection of Emily Carr's paintings, artefacts from the indigenous cultures of the Northwest coast and selected samplings of Carr's sketchbooks, writings and related archival photography.
Emily Carr (1871-1945) was a pioneering, modernist painter active in Victoria, British Columbia (BC), in the first half of the 20th century. Her work displays a dramatic trajectory from darkness to light, beginning with brooding forest scenes and culminating with euphoric sky paintings.
Emily Carr trained as an artist in San Francisco, London and Paris, developing an understanding of European and American modernist traditions, before settling back on Vancouver Island. Over the course of her career she conducted numerous journeys up the coast, painting the forests and the aboriginal settlements, with their monumental totem poles and ceremonial houses, which she encountered.
To mark the exhibition and celebrate the life and work of Emily Carr, Destination British Columbia and Frontier Canada has devised an Emily Carr-inspired itinerary which incorporates some of the major locations, breathtaking scenery and First Nations' heritage and culture that inspired her work. The 7-night holiday includes 2 nights in Vancouver with tickets to the Vancouver Art Gallery which houses a permanent collection of Carr's work, 3 nights in Victoria, BC's capital city and home to the Emily Carr Heritage House, her childhood home, and the Royal BC Museum which houses the largest collection of Emily Carr paintings, and 2 nights at Tsa Kwa Luten Lodge, set in a secluded 1100 acre forest on Quadra Island. Prices start from £1490.00 per person including return flights, 7 nights' accommodation, car hire and museum tickets.
