With March drawing to a close and spring finally in bloom, theres never been a better time to visit Flanders. This Easter weekend, which falls on the second weekend in April, take advantage of the easily accessible location and take a trip to one of Flanders cosmopolitan cities. Easter is a two day holiday in Flanders, covering Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, but as Good Friday is also a UK holiday, dont think twice and make the most of of the extra day to travel to this ideal short-break destination and indulge in a truly continental Easter holiday.
Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent in particular, offer a wide variety of attractions and activities this Easter, so look no further for a more perfect spring getaway. The Sablon in Brussels has fast become a central hub for boutiques and art galleries, and in keeping with the theme of Easter and chocolate eggs, chocolatier Pierre Marcolini invites you to his flagship store on Rue des Minimes to sample his delicious and surprising creations. This chocolate haven, found in the heart of the Sablon is a must for any chocolate fanatic! If, however, you are more of a flower lover than a chocoholic, the traditional flower market on the Kouter in Ghent is open to visitors every Sunday morning between 7h and 13h. Take some time to amble through the stalls of exotic flowers, where you will find a stunning collection of plants, azalea, orchids, seeds, and bulbs. Within the market also lies the famous Blaue Kiosk where you can sit back and relax with a glass of wine or champagne. Finally, it is impossible not to mention Antwerp and the citys legendary chocolatier Burie. While Antwerp is sprinkled with a variety of different chocolate-makers such as Godiva, Leonidas and Neuhaus, hometown favourite Hans Burie is best-known for his over-the-top shop window displays and unique chocolate creations. And, this Easter Burie anticipates that more than 2000 kg of chocolate will be needed just to fill its famous Easter eggs! If passing through Antwerp, it is highly reccommended that you take a look for yourself and marvel at Antwerps very own chocolate delights. If travelling by train, plane, ferry or car, the neighbouring Flemish cities are as little as two hours away from London. VLM Airlines fly from London and Manchester to Antwerp twice daily and prices begin at 110.90 (www.flyvlm.com). Eurostar in turn, offers passengers return tickets to Brussels from London St. Pancras from as little as 59 (www.eurostar.com).
