Easter Holiday Adventures in the Perfect English City, Winchester

Winchester is the perfect escape for families looking to get away this Easter. With festival season kicking off, there has never been a better time to visit. Jam packed with events and activities, from Easter egg hunts, to meeting Thomas the Tank Engine, and a trip to the theatre – there is something for everyone to enjoy. Rich in history, culture and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Winchester truly has earned its name the 'Perfect English City'.

Winchester's convenient location means that families don't have to travel far for Easter fun. Those taking the train from London Waterloo can enjoy a journey of less than one hour to the city centre. Alternatively, Winchester's easy M3 and A34 accessibility makes it the perfect place for those looking to drive into the city.  

Here are just some of Visit Winchester's best Easter events for 2017:

Easter Bunny Hop

From 8th March to 23rd April, the much loved Easter Bunny Hop returns to Winchester this Easter holiday. Follow the trail around the city for a chance to win great prizes and goody bags. The trail starts at the Tourist Information Centre, and is free. 

Wild Egg Trail at Marwell Zoo

Between 1st to 23rd April, Marwell will be hosting a Wild Egg Trail throughout the zoo. Locate all the eggs to complete the trail and reveal the missing word. Visit over the Easter bank holiday weekend to meet the Easter Bunny in his burrow and receive free chocolate egg. Easter is also an exciting time to visit Marwell Zoo, with a number of new arrivals ready to meet visitors; from a West African pygmy hippo calf to the curious and playful tiger cub triplets.

Winchester Science Centre

Between 7th and 24th April, Winchester Science Centre is hosting its Rockets! showcase, an explosive programme of events to celebrate the galactic science of space exploration. Within the activities scheduled, visitors will be able to find out how to build and launch rockets with interactive shows, and experts will be orbiting the centre to share the very latest news about European Space Agency missions.

Easter Fun with Thomas at the Watercress Line

Between 14th to 23rd April, families can meet Thomas the Tank Engine and friends at the Watercress Line. There will be rides on a real steam engine, opportunities to shake hands with The Fat Controller and plenty of free Thomas-themed activities.

Easter Bunny Weekend

Between 14th April and 17th April, hop on down to Sparsholt College Hampshire and join a whole host of nursery rhyme characters for a fun family day out; follow the Easter Trail to find Humpty Dumpty, the Easter Bunny and more. There will be lots of craft activities to enjoy, such as making Easter baskets and even a pea-green boat! There will also be pony rides and face painting.

Where is the Easter Bunny?

Between 15th to 17th April, and starting at the River Park Leisure Centre, there will be a theatrical play based on the classic Easter egg hunt. Explore Winchester's famous landmarks while having Easter fun at the same time. The Easter bunny's friends will be stationed around each landmark, acting out clues and riddles, handing out treats, and leading children around the trail to find the Easter bunny's party at the end.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show

On 18th April and 19th April, the timeless classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, makes its way from book to stage at the Theatre Royal. Eric's Carle's well-known books captivated readers with his iconic colourful hand painted tissue paper collage illustrations and distinctively simple stories, introducing generations of children to a bigger, brighter world – and to their first experience of reading itself.
