ST. MORITZ, November 2014 – Last summer the hotel had Absinthe afternoon tea, this winter season there will be a historical curling tournament. On February 7, 2015, befitting the 150th anniversary celebrations of winter tourism, hotel guests, local residents and Downton Abbey fans will be transported on a sporting journey back to the late 19th century on Badrutt's Palace Hotel's ice rink.
A legendary bet took place between Johannes Badrutt and his English guests 150 years ago. This winter season 2014/15 we will be celebrating the pioneer who turned St. Moritz into one of the most beloved destinations in the Alps, and who, in 1880, opened Europe's first curling rink. To celebrate, Badrutt's Palace Hotel will present the Downton Palace on Ice event on the first Saturday of White Turf.
The ladies and gentlemen of the German Victorian costume club “Victorias Enkel” (Victoria's Grandchildren) will slip into the roles of the guests of the time and model the winter fashions of the late 19th century, while taking part in a friendly curling tournament against current-day curling fans on the hotel's own ice rink. The original and historical outfits and a well-placed service brigade to provide sustenance to the participants complete the backdrop, which could be a scene from the internationally successful TV drama Downton Abbey.
Downton Palace on Ice is the follow-up event from Downton Palace which took place in summer 2014 and stems from the popular English TV drama Downton Abbey written and produced by Oscar winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes. The internationally successful costume drama is set in Downton Abbey, an estate owned by the English nobility, the Crawley family, offering up a wealth of material for power struggles, intrigue and personal relationships. Different to today's soap operas the series touches on unusual aspects of historical events in the early 20th century.
