Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) is conducting a worldwide search to find six teams of adventurous filmmakers to participate in the second annual Dominica Film Challenge. The qualifying teams will be sent on an all-expenses paid creative expedition (February 28 – March 7) to the tropical Caribbean island of Dominica in the West Indies.
The Dominica Film Challenge is designed to encourage participants to tell and share the story of Dominica in their own creative way through film.
Known as “The Nature Island,” Dominica (pronounced Dom-in-eek-a) is a truly unspoiled paradise. Not to be confused with the Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic, Dominica sits midway along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, between Martinique and Guadeloupe.
The sparsely populated island nation, with only 70,000 people inhabiting the 289-square-mile island, is two-thirds covered by tropical rainforests, which are home to 1,200 plant species. Secret beaches, rivers, lakes, streams, hot springs, and waterfalls cover the island. The volcanic physique points to extensive geothermal activity – even underwater, which makes Dominica a haven for adventure divers and hikers alike.
“Dominica is the secret Caribbean paradise we have all dreamed of,” said Michael Kraabel, executive producer of the Dominica Film Challenge. “It's the perfect location for an eclectic mix of filmmakers and storytellers to experience something extraordinary – and then to document the experience for the world to see.”
“Visitors are amazed at the rich cultural heritage, friendly people and picturesque natural beauty Dominica has to offer,” said Colin Piper, director of tourism. “We welcome an opportunity to showcase a truly authentic Nature Island experience through the lenses and written words of the expedition teams.”
Adventurers and expedition applicants should visit www.dominicachallenge.com where they will be asked to detail their creative and travel experience, and the unique perspective their team would bring to the expedition. Applications are due by 19 January 2015. Selected teams will be notified by 26 January with travel to Dominica taking place 28 February – 7 March.
