The story of the rescued dolphin found in Cancun's hotel zone on August 13 has a happy ending with its return to its natural habitat after 4 weeks of arduous medical treatments and oversight by Dolphin Discovery personal.

The dolphin, which was hurt by the reefs that surround Cancun and Isla Mujeres when it went off its course as a result of an illness was rescued by Cancun firefighters and brought over to the Turtle Farm facilities of Isla Mujeres with the 24-hour supervision of veterinarians at Dolphin Discovery Group who were called to help once it was determined that the mammal would need special help to recover.

Veterinarians at Dolphin Discovery Group worked with the dolphin until its full recovery monitoring its health and behavior of the cetacean, providing medical assistance from its initial assessment, while it was transported to a recovery facility and finally during its reinstatement to the Caribbean Sea.

"We did blood studies, ultrasounds and endoscopy’s because of the hepatic origin of the illness and the need for a speedy recovery," said MVZ Roberto Sanchez, Dolphin Discovery Group Veterinary Director. "Most recently, we were working on gaining weight. We do not expect it to be difficult for the dolphin to back into its natural habitat since is a female specie.”

PROFEPA, Mexico’s governmental organization that works towards the conservation of wild life, oversaw all rescue efforts, transportation and release and Isla Mujeres’ Office of Parks and Museums facilitated the transfer to the Turtle Farm facilities where the dolphin was hosted during its recovery.
