Distinctive Neighborhoods Offer Unique Products and Local Flavors

Visit Salt Lake

In a quest for all things authentic, shoppers are helping diverse neighborhoods thrive throughout the city. Suggestions for shopping neighborhood excursions include several Salt Lake spots.

The City Center is the heart of Salt Lake's shopping experience. Two downtown malls feature the Olympic Spirit Store, Masseys Jewelers, Souvenir Stop at Temple Square, and Bentley Square, a handmade gift emporium. Sam Weller's Zion Bookstore, one of America's largest bookstores, specializes in used and rare tomes. The personable Oxford Shop provides top-drawer shoes for men, next door to UTah Artist Hands specializing in local art. Bennion Jewelers, Utah's oldest jeweler, is around the corner from O.C. Tanner, the legendary goldsmith and maker of Olympic medals.

Salt Lake's Avenues neighborhood frames Queen Anne cottages, Victorian gingerbreads, and Arts and Crafts bungalows with specialty boutiques. The E Street Gallery, housed in a refurbished brick storefront, is full of handcrafted furnishings, glassware, and a treasure trove of jewelry. A few steps away, The Stable Fine Arts offers museum-quality art, custom furnishings, and antiques. Q Street Fine Crafts is sleek and contemporary with modern glass art, jewelry, and chic furnishings.

In a national historic site made up of vintage red brick trolley barns, shoppers enjoy a cozy enclave of shops, galleries, and restaurants at Trolley Square. Among the Square's 80 shops, Wild Earth Images makes a great stop for photos of scenic Utah, and the Secret Garden is a must stop for well-heeled kids.

The hip little Ninth and Ninth neighborhood includes coffee houses, an art movie house, gift shops, and galleries. Western River Flyfisher is a renowned fly-fishing purveyor, while Floribunda dazzles with bobbles, bangles, and exquisite papers. Chameleon Art Wear stocks international clothing and jewelry.

The Fifteenth and Fifteenth neighborhood is the classy, grown-up sibling to Ninth and Ninth. One of Salt Lake's premier Italian cafes, Fresco, shares a house with the beloved King's English Bookstore. Great Garb stocks high fashions, and the Blue Cockatoo is a gift shop extraordinaire. The Framery rounds out the area with fine art, prints, and frames.

Around the site of a long-gone sugar beet processing factory the Sugarhouse district is nearly bursting with second-hand shops, antique dealers, world-craft stores, and locally produced art shops. Shoppers browse through streets packed with chic little home furnishing stores such as Hip & Humble, Bountiful Home, the 1960-vintage Green Ant, and Robert Redford's Sundance Catalog outlet store.

Shopping goes big city bohemian with art galleries and hip second-hand collectible shops on Pierpont Street in the Warehouse District. Hijinx engages playful spirits with kites, toys, games, puzzles, and yo-yos. Tony Caputo's stacked-to-the-rafters Italian deli is just around the corner from gourmet shops Carlucci's Bakery and Aquarius Fish Co. The grand new Gateway, a three-block long, open-air, multi-level marketplace is anchored by the historic Union Pacific Train Depot. Sophisticated national chains are interspersed with local spots like Cummings Studio Chocolates, a Salt Lake tradition since 1924.
