With a huge range of outdoor activities, beautiful Lochaber in the western Highlands is the perfect place to discover your natural talent in the Year of Natural Scotland. From the snowy peaks of Ben Nevis to the majestic beauty of Glencoe and mainland Britain’s most westerly point at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, adventure awaits in some of the country’s most iconic locations.
Whether it is tackling Britain’s highest mountain, pedaling among the pines in unspoilt wilderness, walking through mile upon mile of picturesque hillside, glen and forest and spectacular coastline, or sea kayaking beside pristine beaches, there is something for everyone.
Nature fans can go on wild safaris, spotting red squirrels, seals, otters, red deer and golden eagles – Scotland’s Big Five – and could maybe even catch a glimpse of a minke whale, pine marten or wild cat too. Those who want to sample something a little more high octane can try indoor or outdoor ice climbing, white water rafting, diving, canyoning, sailing and mountain biking or attend some of the world class events which celebrate the outdoors including the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup,Wild Lochaber Festival, The Big Ben Nevis Triathlon and the Tour de Ben Ben Nevis.
With its stunning natural surroundings and so many exhilarating activities to choose from, it is no wonder Lochaber has earned itself a reputation as the Outdoor Capital of the UK. It is the UK’s ultimate outdoor playground and for 2013 it is running a campaign to make it easier for people to have a go at a wide range of outdoor activities to discover their natural talent.
The Outdoor Capital has put together a series of exciting packages with its partners which help pair those that want to have a go at one of the many outdoor activities on offer in the region, with partner companies and professionals who can make it happen, providing equipment, instruction, guiding and a range of accommodation, from luxury hotels to camping and self-catering eco lodges.
