Abraham Lincoln is one of the most respected presidents in U.S. history, due to his heroic efforts to end slavery and the civil War, unifying the nation. Lincoln spent 30 years building a political career in the rural courthouses of Illinois before heading off to the White House as the 16th U.S. president in 1861.
Springfield was the city where he lived and raised his family, and is a great place for history buffs to begin their exploration of all things Abe, just 200 miles (322km) and an easy Amtrak train ride from Chicago.
