Captains of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching boats reported seeing 17 blue whales last Saturday within a three mile radius of Dana Point, resulting in Dana Wharfs scheduling whale watching cruises Monday Friday, 5pm-7pm and some weekends. The cost is $25.00 per person; children 4 and under are free. The breathtaking blue whale is one of the rorquals, a family that also includes the humpback whale, fin whale, Bryde's whale, sei whale, and minke whale. The blue whale makes deep and rumbling sounds that can be felt as much as heard. These low-frequency sounds travel long distances through water, allowing blue whales to communicate with each other over hundreds of miles of ocean. The blue whale is the largest mammal, possibly the largest animal, to ever inhabit the earth. Its body is long, somewhat tapered, and streamlined, with the head making up less than one-fourth of its total body length.
Tickets for whale watching can be reserved one week in advance with credit card by calling 949-496-5794 ext 7. Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching is located at 34675 Golden Lantern in Dana Point.
