Cottages To Castles Presents The Neapolitan Riviera

Cottages to Castles

The setting of countless novels and Audrey Hepburn movies, the Neapolitan Riviera has been the holiday hot spot for the rich, famous and lovers of all things Italian. Now it's your turn.........

Famed for its heart-racing cliff-top roads, superb views and deep blue coves, this region of Italy isn't the winner of the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice award for nothing.  Appearing on almost all our wish lists, it's a tough choice to make when you have such a short time here.  Here's our top 5 towns to visit and the must-dos when you're there this summer.

  1. Pompeii: A UNESCO World Heritage site, these Roman ruins attract over 2 million each year.  But don't let that put you off.........  when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, it destroyed the city below and captured the devastation in its lava and ash.  It is a truly amazing experience as you learn of life under the shadow of the volcano.  A moving and wonderful visit for all the family.  Top tip:  wear flat shoes and take the audio tour to make the most of your visit.
  2. Positano: Described as a 'dream place' by John Steinbeck, this picturesque town brimming with villas, handicraft shops, restaurants and boutiques all cling to the cliff-sides that cascade down to the small bay and beach below.  Its green and gold domed church, white Moorish style houses, adorned with bougainvillaea offers a real photograph opportunity.  Top tip:  don't forget your camera!
  3. CapriGlamorous and extremely exclusive, Capri is one of the small islands that sits opposite the Riviera.  Leave the car behind and hop on the water taxi or ferry to explore the island in all its glory, including the Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni rocks and the Palazzo al Mare.  Top tip:  snorkel from Marina Piccola beach on the island's south side, believed to be the spot where Odysseus nearly succumbed to the Sirens' song.
  4. SorrentoWith fantastic views across the bay, Sorrento is a bustling Italian town with a whole host of things to see and do.  Sit in the Piazza Tasso and do what the Italians do best....... Drink coffee and people watch!  Top tip:  Check out the limoncello in the bars, restaurants and the numerous limoncello stores (Sorrento is the birthplace of the potent lemon liqueur) - just leave the car behind!
  5. Ravello: Three miles of twists and turns up the mountain road, and you reach the romantic little town of Ravello that has been attracting celebrities for centuries.  Think Greta Garbo, D.H. Lawrence, (who wrote Lady Chatterley's Lover here) and Robert Wagner to name but a few.  Ravello's Duomo (Cathedral) and Villa Cimbrone (both 11th century) and Villa Rufolo (13th century) are all magnificent sights. Top tip:  time your trip to coincide with the annual summer Ravello Festival that began as a salute to Wagner's music, but now showcases a wide range of music and arts.
