Three judges to select top three bands
at Cotai Strip Resorts Macao Oct. 11-13
Cotai Strip Resorts Macao has finalised the judging panel for the Cotai Jazz & Blues Festival competition. Mitch Myers, Corey Frye and José Isaac Duarte will decide which three of the 12 finalists are able to take home a portion of the cash prize pool of HK$500,000 over the three-day competition at The Venetian® Macao, Oct. 11-13. The Cultural Affairs Bureau (ICM) is the supporting entity for the festival.
The three judges will watch the 12 bands perform in 30-minute sets for visitors over Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12. Bands will be assessed on their style, improvisation, technique, musicality, performance and audience response, leading to a final round with five shortlisted bands playing a half-hour set each in the final showdown on Sunday, Oct. 13. The three winners will be announced at a 10 p.m. ceremony that evening.
Mitch Myers is a renowned Jazz critic, psychologist, editor, and respected freelance writer for many American magazines including The Hollywood Reporter, Down Beat, JazzTimes, Magnet and High Times. He is also the author of the book on popular music culture, "The Boy Who Cried Freebird: Rock & Roll Fables and Sonic Storytelling." Corey Frye is the vocalist of The Main Squeeze, the winning band of last year's The Venetian Carnival Jazz & Blues Battle of the Bands contest. José Isaac Duarte is the Vice President of the Macau Jazz Club, and is an economist, university lecturer and media economics analyst.
The admission-free Cotai Jazz & Blues Festival once again transforms The Venetian Macao's outdoor lagoon into New Orleans Mardi Gras through performers, lights, beads, international food and music, Oct. 11-13. Its music competition brings together 12 finalists representing an impressive pool of international talent from mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, India, Russia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, the U.S. and Australia.
Last year's The Venetian Carnival Jazz & Blues Battle of the Bands contest was met with an overwhelming response, and is back again in 2013 as the Cotai Jazz & Blues Festival competition. From Oct. 11 to 13, visitors and locals alike will have a chance to enjoy a weekend of non-stop live music and entertainment suitable for all ages. The fun-filled fairground at The Venetian Macao's outdoor lagoon features family areas, face painting for kids, indoor and outdoor gondola rides, and a Chillout Area and Beer Garden. The festival is open 6:30 p.m. to midnight Friday, and 1 p.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday.
