Chaos will be brought to the roads of Corsica this weekend with the start of the Tour de France. But it's not all about the cycling on this dramatic mountainous island. Corisca is home to probably the best trek in Europe outside of the Alps, the Corsican Haute Route - otherwise known as the GR20.
Famous for its spectacular coastline and pretty, perched mountain villages, the rugged island of Corsica reveals its' most spectacular scenery only to those who are prepared to explore it on foot. Starting out by trekking in the south-east amongst the towering pinnacles of Bavella, the trail takes us through the heart of the island and to the far North. The route covers a total of 180km of mountainous terrain with approx 12,000 metres of ascent and descent over a 2-week holiday. The variety of terrain is inspiring from rocky, forested slopes to high pasture, airy ridges and alpine valleys.
Less strenuous but equally stunning is Corsica's Mountains to the Sea walk - scenic walking from the mountain terrain beneath the peak of Paglia Orba (2525m), down to the stunning Gulf of Porto.
