Coolstays has added detailed eco-credentials to listings on its website, allowing property owners to highlight the steps they're taking to be as environmentally-friendly as possible. Not only will listings now feature these credentials, but properties will now display an overall green rating, which will be highlighted in search results.
Coolstays hope these steps will encourage owners to think more environmentally when building, heating, and running their properties, whilst also giving holidaymakers the chance to make informed decisions when booking accommodation.
Co-founder Claire Wills said: “Every holiday involves some cost to the planet. No matter how close to home you might be staying, your chosen mode of transport, or whatever kind of property you're staying in, your trip will have an associated environmental impact.
"By highlighting eco-credentials and displaying them in searches, we're able to provide holidaymakers with as much environmental information as possible, encouraging individuals to think about this when booking their next trip.
“We're also championing green properties, allowing owners to show off the measures they've taken to reduce their impact on the environment."
Coolstays is also taking steps of its own in order to directly support local wildlife conservation in a bid to help offset its carbon footprint.
Speaking about these steps, co-founder Tim Wills said: “We know that carbon offsetting is a contentious issue, but we want to go further than net zero and be a 'climate positive' business if we can.
“With that in mind we're doing what we can to shift the balance with immediate action - donating a proportion of our business revenue to support these varied wildlife projects around the UK.”
Working with conservation experts GreenTheUK, Coolstays has committed to planting 22,000 square metres of wildflower meadows across the UK and 800 trees in Devon and North Yorkshire. The organisation is also funding the restoration of 292 square metres of native oysters in the Solent and the restoration of four inshore kelp forests on the Sussex coast.
Coolstays has also worked with sustainability specialists at Positive Planet to measure and analyse its carbon footprint and the business is now able to call itself carbon neutral.
