The energy in Cleveland continues to rise with new developments, distinct events and intriguing exhibitions throughout the area. From all-star sports experiences to world-class arts and culture (without a hint of world-class ego), visitors can experience the passion, creativity and authenticity of this lakefront Midwest city and see firsthand why Travel + Leisure said Cleveland is the “coolest place you've never thought to visit.”
Here's why Cleveland is worth a visit in 2019:
Major League Baseball's All-Star Game Returns
From July 5-9, 2019 the Cleveland Indians will host the 2019 MLB All-Star Game at Progressive Field. The team has hosted the Midsummer Classic more than any other, and Cleveland is ready to welcome fans for a week of activities celebrating America's favorite pastime, including the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game FanFest.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Continues to Evolve
In 2018, the world's only Rock & Roll Hall of Fame debuted an entire floor of the museum devoted to rock 'n' roll's greatest contributors, which includes a redesigned space honoring each inductee, an interactive “Voice Your Choice” area where fans can share their nominations and new Inductee Jukeboxes. Plus, the Power of Rock Experience gives visitors a front row seat to performances from their favorite inductees with an immersive film by Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme.
The Class of 2019 will be inducted in March, and fans can catch the exhibit dedicated to the musicians when it debuts this spring. Other special exhibits include Part of the Machine: Rock & Pinball (now-Spring 2019) which showcases rock-themed, playable pinball machines, and Stay Tuned: Rock on TV (now-March 2019), a multi-sensory exhibition that explores how television and technology pushed music and artistry to new heights.
Inspiration Abounds with World-Class Arts and Cultural Experiences
- In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MoCa) will present a self-titled exhibition from Lee Mingwei (March 22-July 28, 2019), which will feature four distinct projects designed to enchant and engage audiences with interactive experiences.
- The New York Times has declared The Cleveland Orchestra as “the best in America” and the Orchestra's 101st season is sure to be no exception.
- In 2019, the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) welcomes Georgia O'Keeffe: Living Modern (November 23, 2018-March 3, 2019) that offers a unique look into the fascinating connections between the paintings, personal style and public persona of one of America's most iconic artists. Plus, Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art (April 9-June 30, 2019) is the first exploration devoted to Shinto art from collections in both the U.S. and Japan.
Downtown is as Vibrant as Ever
Downtown Cleveland celebrated the milestone of 15,000 residents in Sept. 2017, making it the largest residential downtown in the state. For visitors, three new hotels joined the landscape within the last three years: Hilton Cleveland Downtown offers Superman-like views of Lake Erie from its window-filled bar on the 32nd floor, the Drury Plaza Hotel opened inside the historic Cleveland Board of Education building and The Kimpton Schofield Hotel delights guests with its charming design and central location in a historic, repurposed building. Plus, a transformed Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland (Oct. 2017) highlights décor and experiences that honor Cleveland's spirit and cultural diversity, and a renovated Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower (Summer 2018) showcases a new fine-dining restaurant, Il Venetian, along with Vedas Fitness Gym and Spa.
The Flats are Back with Riverside Dining and Entertainment
Located on the Cuyahoga River, The Flats district was an entertainment hub during its initial heyday in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the Flats East Bank showcases a significant rejuvenation, and residents and visitors flock to the area for the waterfront boardwalk, riverside dining and buzzing nightlife scene.
The Culinary Scene Beckons
Cleveland's award-winning dining and beverage scene remains a strong draw and continues to grow.
- Located in the historic bank lobby of the Garfield Building, Marble Room Steak and Raw Bar offers diners a visual feast in an opulent dining space.
- Delicious and creatively-decorated, beer-infused doughnuts draw the crowds to Brewnuts, which opened in 2017.
- Known for his work in foraging and fermentation, Jeremy Umansky opened Larder Delicatessen and Bakery in April 2018 with a menu of traditional delicatessen offerings created with non-traditional techniques.
- Hand-cured meats and sausages are on full display at Saucisson in the Slavic Village neighborhood. Melissa Khoury and Penny Barend (The Lady Butchers) utilize local farms that are humane and hormone-free to show off a true passion for the art of butchering.
- At Ohio City Galley, a restaurant incubator and food hall that opened in October 2018, diners enjoy craft cocktails from a communal bar as four aspiring chef-owners test out their concepts.
Our Craft Brews Are as Intriguing as Their Surroundings
Whether it's a historic ship supply store built in 1863 or a former car dealership that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, many breweries have taking old-school facilities and infused them with new life as bustling breweries.
- Visitors can now sip their way through Northeast Ohio's thriving beer scene with the new Cleveland Brewery Passport.
- Multiple Cleveland breweries brought home medals from the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, including a gold medal for Masthead Brewing Co.'s Midwest Red IPA, a 10th consecutive medal for Fat Head's Brewery's Midnight Moonlight and a gold medal for Market Garden Brewery's Nano-OG Lager.
