Club Med announced today the sale of its Byron Bay resort to the Melbourne-based property group Becton Ltd.
The resort was acquired by Club Med in 1991 and has been successfully operated as a family destination.
Throughout the period, Club Med added significant improvements including a restaurant complex, a conference centre, and Australias first Circus School. The propertys chalet-style accommodation was also upgraded.
During its tenure, Club Med also carefully managed and added to the extensive native flora plantings across the 92-hectare seafront site.
Francky Gueguen, Club Meds recently appointed General Manager for the Australia, New Zealand and Pacific region said the native environment had been a prime attraction for Club Med and again for Becton.
Mr Gueguen said the Byron Bay Beach Club had been operated as a stand-alone resort in hotel format with its own name and logo. It was not a conventional Club Med property and did not have the comparable level of facilities and staffing as other of the groups resort villages.
Its sale was therefore a sensible business strategy, allowing us to concentrate on our prime Lindeman Island property.
Lindeman Island is currently undergoing refurbishment, as are other resort properties in the Asia Pacific area.
The sale of the property was negotiated by Brisbane based Mike Batchelor of James Lang La Salle Hotels
