The city has around 20 large Christmas markets with around 1,000 stands, as well as numerous smaller temporary markets, charity stands and huts selling punch and mulled wine. Traditionalists make a beeline for the large Advent markets in the city center, such as the Vienna Christmas World at the Christmas Market on Rathausplatz (set against the imposing backdrop of City Hall), or the Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung. The Culture and Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace and the Christmas villages in front of the Belvedere Palace and on Maria-Theresien-Platz all have impressive imperial backdrops.
Art Advent – Arts & Crafts on Karlsplatz, Spittelberg Christmas Market and Am Hof Advent Market all offer beautiful yuletide handicrafts. WeihnachtsQuartier in the MuseumsQuartier is a magnet for fans of designer goods, while foodies will be in their element at the Advent markets on Mahlerstrasse and in the courtyard of specialist tea store Haas & Haas.
At the Winter Market on Riesenradplatz in the Prater there is entertainment and live music for visitors to enjoy. Winter in the MQ at the MuseumsQuartier approaches the run up to Christmas from a different angle with an unusual winter landscape, artistic light installations and other highlights. For all this diversity, Vienna's Advent markets also have plenty in common: a wide selection of products and a mouthwatering choice of food and hot drinks, including spiced teas, drinking chocolate, mulled wine and punch, as well as warming snacks and sweet treats.
Vienna Christmas World at the Christmas Market on Rathausplatz and the neighboring park includes a 4,000 square meter ice rink, which is open until December 30, 2017 and again from January 1-14, 2018. After which point the area will be extended for Vienna Ice World which opens on January 19, 2018 at 5pm.
