Chena Hot Springs Celebrates 90 Years of Easy Travel

Chena Hot Springs Resort

Chena Hot Springs Resort is celebrating 90 years of continuous road improvement and easy access to Alaskas favorite natural mineral hot springs. Prior to the summer of 1911, the trail to the hot springs took anywhere from one to three weeks to reach from Fairbanks, depending on the weather and road conditions. Travel by horse-drawn rigs had shortened the trip to two-and-half days through a stretch of country populated by only four roadhouse keepers who made their living feeding and housing the travelers.

After the improvements, the trail to the springs took only twenty hours and was described as being in excellent condition for dog mushing and even passable for bicycles. Regular runs between Fairbanks and the resort via the Hot Springs Stage with comfortable four-horse double rigs making round trips every ten days was established.

Now the 56.4-mile drive down Chena Hot Springs Road, takes a little over an hour on a paved, scenic stretch that takes you by farms, homes, bed & breakfasts and stores.

In 1911, Chena Hot Springs boasted a stable, bathhouse and twelve small cabins for visitors. It was already becoming a popular spot for world-weary residents and travelers. Ninety years later, the Resort has 72 hotel rooms, 8 suites and 7 cabins. A 3,500-foot airstrip allows visitors to fly in and out with ease. The Resort also is home to indoor and outdoor natural hot springs pools, a lodge with excellent dining and bar, as well as summer and winter activities ranging from horseback riding, rafting, fishing, flightseeing, massages, ATV 4-wheeling, snow machining, aurora viewing, sleigh rides, snow cat tours, dog sled rides, and cross country skiing.

Chena Hot Springs Resort originally attracted people who sought relief to aches and pains and were willing to expend a great deal of energy and time to get there. Now all of its benefits are within easy reach and this has made Chena Hot Springs Resort the best known and favorite destination in Alaska for those who seek both the healing properties of the water and a great time in Alaskas great outdoors.
