One of the most historic, and magical, underground spaces in Britain is currently being transformed, before being re-opened to the public this Easter.
Cox's Cave in Cheddar Gorge, Somerset, has had a huge footfall of visitors, guests, experts and royals ever since it was first discovered in 1837.
But this will be the first time in a quarter of a century that the showcave will have been the subject of a complete makeover - with the aim of re-establishing it as a leading attraction for the South West of England.
The cave itself consists of seven small grottoes joined by low archways. Inside, it offers a natural, atmospheric setting of calcite sculptures and mirror pools - and is a part of the dramatic Cheddar Gorge which, in the 12th century, was described as one of the Four Wonders of England.
It is hoped the developments at Cox's Cave will help re-establish it as one of the South West's “must-see” attractions, and give 21st century visitors a totally different experience to any previously encountered in this remarkable underground world.
London-based LCI Productions - a multi-media company which has more than 30 years experience in the creation of spectacular, stunning shows and events around the world - has been tasked with the job of creating a state-of-the-art experience at Cheddar, and are currently installing all of the lasers, lights, technology and 'wow-factor' needed to give an entirely new generation of visitors to Cheddar an experience of a lifetime.
Better news still is that access to Cox's Cave will continue to be included in the general admission price of a visit to Cheddar Gorge and Caves.
Further details, including the name of the experience, will be announced shortly.
The new experience at Cox's Cave is part of a £400,000 investment plan at Cheddar Gorge and Caves for 2016, which will also see the introduction of new branding, and some new interpretation. Buildings and shop-fronts in the Gorge are also to be repainted, as the first step in a new phase of reinvestment in the attraction.
