SUNRIVER, Ore. –We're in store for a banner year in 2015 across Central Oregon as we welcome new attractions, restaurants and activities while we celebrate milestone anniversaries for some of our biggest draws.
- Sunriver Resort this summer is excited to open a new swimming and lounge area called The Cove in addition to three completely remodeled and rebranded restaurants. All of the projects are expected to be completed in late May, just in time for the busy summer season.
- Black Butte Ranch is also furiously finishing a couple of massive projects, including a new pool, rec center and dining/retail space. Those projects also will be completed in time for the summer crowds.
- Three of Central Oregon's 30 golf courses (part of the Central Oregon Golf Trail) were named on Golf Digest's Top 100 Public Courses of 2015/2016. Pronghorn (33) Crosswater Club at Sunriver (51) and Tetherow (54) are the cream of the crop of Central Oregon golf, which offers some of the most diverse courses in the state. Aspen Lakes in Sisters and the Fazio Course at Pronghorn were also listed among Golf Digest's Top 15 Courses in Oregon.
- Bend later this year will rejoice with the opening of a new $11.35 million ice rink and pavilion located in the heart of town. The full-sized ice rink is a first for our region and expects to be a huge boon for adult and youth hockey tournaments during the winter. The rink will be turned into multi-use courts during warmer months, making sure the premium location is well utilized 365 days a year.
- Just down the road from that project, work continues on the Deschutes River Safe Passage project, which will allow river floaters to bypass a once-dangerous dam on their way to Mirror Pond in downtown Bend. The project also includes Oregon's very first whitewater park for kayakers. Parks and Rec staff will be able to change the flow/rapids of the river for the park with the touch of a button on a tablet computer! The massive project should be completed in late summer with additional park improvements lasting until next year.
- The Newberry National Volcanic Monument is celebrating 25 years this summer with activities all season long and into next year. The monument is highlighted by the Lava Lands Visitor Center, Paulina and East Lake, Obsidian Flow and other natural experiences.
- The Sisters Rodeo celebrates 75 years this summer in June while the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show celebrates 40 years in July.
