Booligal Sheep Races – 11 April 2015

According to the Chinese zodiac, 2015 is the year of the sheep and according to the all knowing Wikipedia, the Chinese commonly regard sheep as an auspicious animal – something the community of Booligal in south western NSW have always believed. This largely sheep growing area will this year celebrate the 17th annual JBS Booligal Sheep Races, a volunteer run event that attracts over 300 visitors to the small village each year. Over the course of the day, 100 auspicious sheep will via for the Booligal Cup – with the winning owners taking home $500 in prize money.

“For us, every year is the year of the sheep – but it is good to know that in terms of the Chinese zodiac calendar, this year is meant to bring promise and prosperity” said Sandra Ireson, secretary of the JBS Booligal Sheep Races. “ We have had a dryer then usual lead up to the cup, but spirits are high and the race track is looking fantastic. With the support of our sponsors, we are able to donate about $10 000 per year to local and national charities and it is still a great way for our local community to get together and put on a great day out for visitors” added Mrs Ireson.

“This year's event, for the first time, will feature the Tapper Agri Services Booligal Crawl, a race of a different kind but still with a nod to our wooly friends. It is going to be a hugely entertaining event, for both kids and adults with some terrific prizes on offer” said Mrs Ireson.

Visitors can hire a sheep to race on the day, giving everyone the chance to be part of the action. A full bbq featuring the ever popular JBS Booligal Chop Pops will be back as well as lots of entertainment for the kids, including sumo suits and a giant slide.

While the aim of the day is to raise much needed funds for local and national charities, the focus for the committee is on providing a great day out for the whole family and of course to celebrate The Year of the Sheep.
