Skyros writing retreats offer writers, thinkers and dabblers the opportunity to learn from distinguished writers, share the joys and struggles of the creative process, discover their strengths and polish their skills.
In an idyllic holiday environment, far away from the demands and routines dictated by a busy life, writing holiday course participants can navigate beyond old boundaries and emerge with pieces of writing of which to feel proud.
Writing courses are open to novices with a secret passion for writing as much as to writers who already have a book under their belt. The tutors enjoy helping people at any stage of development.
The Skyros Writers' Lab has built up an excellent reputation over the years. Steven Berkoff, Rachel Billington, Margaret Drabble, Hanif Kureishi, D M Thomas, Sue Townsend, Marina Warner, Hugo Williams and many others, including Booker and Pulitzer Prize winners such as Hilary Mantel, James Kelman, Barry Unsworth, Bernice Rubens and Alison Lurie, have graced the centre with their presence over the years and given hundreds of people the benefit of their experience.
Masterclasses run from May through to July. Our amazing 2023 writing facilitators include:
20 May - 27 May - £875
Finding Your Writing Voice - Lisa Harding
This week-long masterclass with Lisa Harding will draw on exercises to unlock the individual writer's greatest strengths, focusing on character, voice, place and setting, love of language, inspiration and impulse.
Participants will cover a variety of forms and find the one best suited to the individual. We aim to delve deep and most importantly, have fun and fire up the imagination. The objective is to stimulate our creativity in an inspiring, supportive environment and to foster a love for the writing process that will continue long after the holiday has ended.
3 - 10 June - £875
Writing Your Story - Julia Bell
Whether it's a novel or a memoir or just a daily journal, this course will give the tools to start (or kickstart) a writing practise to help participants develop the story they've always wanted to write. Working from life and from the imagination, this course will improve their ways with words, storytelling skills, confidence and enthusiasm to keep on writing once the course is over.
10 - 23 June - £1595
Write Your Life, Craft Your Novel - Steve Attridge
All lives are stories, all stories have a life. The powerful relationship between living and writing and tapping into the unconscious. Workshops on some of the many imaginative ways we can think about our life and language, and therefore of living and organising life and work creatively. Techniques will build on each other to produce interesting work.
24 June - 1 July - £895
Start to Write - Mez Packer
Mez's course will focus on aspects of writing; how to develop ideas and make participants' writing shine. By the end of the week they will have written a short story, or a chapter from their novel or memoir, and will come home brimming with enthusiasm to continue their writing journey.
