The charming Channel Island of Guernsey is in the spotlight this year, with the release of the hotly anticipated British historical drama “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” on Netflix.
Based on the novel of the same name by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” debuts on Netflix on August 10. The film tells the story of writer Juliet Ashton (played by “Mamma Mia's” Lily James) as she forms bonds with the eccentric residents of Guernsey following the German occupation of the island during World War II.
In honor of the film's release, The Old Government House Hotel & Spa in St Peter Port, Guernsey's only five-star hotel, is offering a luxurious new package called 'Guernsey in the Limelight.' The hotel is a great base for fans of the book and film to discover the island's history, natural beauty and maritime attractions.
One of Britain's lesser-known gems, Guernsey sits in the English Channel between the UK and France and has a colorful history stretching back 800 years. It is the only part of Great Britain to have been occupied during World War II. Many relics of the occupation still exist on the island, including German-built concrete outposts along the coast. The hotel itself was used by German officers during the war, initially as a military headquarters, then later as a Soldatenheim (soldiers' home) where officers could spend their downtime. Historic transcripts and correspondence generated during the occupation can even be found on the premises.
The 'Guernsey in the Limelight' package includes two nights' accommodation, a copy of “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” book, and a themed dinner for two featuring a special menu inspired by life during the occupation. Highlights of the menu, which incorporates local Guernsey produce, include a starter of Guernsey crab; catch of the day pan-seared and served with squash purée and fondant potato; and Guernsey Gâche (fruit loaf) served with Guernsey Dairy Sorbet. Prices start at $300 per room per night, based on two people sharing a Classic Double Room for two nights.
