The New Year's celebrations may be over, but with all of Canada's COVID restrictions removed, Frontier Ski claims the upcoming events at Alberta's SkiBig3 resorts (view Frontier Ski's SkiBig3 Guide), and in the towns of Banff and Lake Louise, will be better than ever this season (2022/23).
Get ready for Snow Days, a celebration of the Great White North's arts, culture and sport, and high-energy events like Lake Louise's Big Mountain Challenge. Mount Norquay's "Lifts of Love" (February 11) is set to put a fresh twist on speed dating, and still to be scheduled, Banff Sunshine's award-winning end-of-season Slush Cup will see out North America's longest non-glacial ski season in style.
Set in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Banff Snow Days (January 18-29) is a chance for everyone to frolic in the snow for 12 days straight. Off the slopes, there's plenty more on offer than just ski, including dog sledding, sleigh rides and even night tubing at Mt. Norquay. In the early days of the festival, snow sculpting artists actively carve their impressive works from enormous blocks of snow (Bear Street the best place to head), and on January 28, athletes from Skijour Canada will descend on Banff Avenue to showcase their horse-riding and ski stunt skills. New for 2023, are the SkijorStyle Fashion Show, where spectators who choose to mix up western wear and ski apparel will be given the chance to win prizes, and the Skijor Meet & Greet with Banff Trail Riders and their horses. For the quintessential Canadian experience, try skating on Lake Louise, the rink complete with its own fairytale ice castle.
Lake Louise's Big Mountain Challenge (March 10) is a thrilling test for anyone interested in freeriding the ski resort's most difficult terrain (March 10). Competitive skiing and snowboarding with no set courses, all entrants are judged on skill, tricks, jumps and clean riding, on what is around a two-minute ride from top to bottom. There are ski and snowboard categories for both men and women who are age 18+, and this year there will be a brand new Masters Category for those aged 40+. Registration is due to open soon...
One of Mount Norquay's many events running throughout the season, "Lifts of Love" (February 11), is an opportunity for skiers and snowboarders to find their soulmate on the slopes. Single strangers will pair up and take a ride on a high speed quad, with guests having just two or three minutes to see if sparks fly on the snow. When the lift reaches the top, daters have the option of continuing their conversation, or they can head back to the bottom and find someone new. The evening also includes an Après Ski Mixer with live DJ at Norquay's Lone Pine Pub.
Winner of Travel Alberta's "Event of the Year," Alto award, Banff Sunshine's end-of-season Slush Cup is legendary (date TBC). The event was initially conceived as a dare back in 1928, when two friends happened upon a fresh pond of meltwater while skiing what is now Banff Sunshine Village. Traditionally celebrated on the last day of the season, you can expect non-stop entertainment as entrants try to cross the full length of an ice-cold pond (in the craziest costumes) on skis or a snowboard. Entrants (18+) should arrive as early as 7:15am to snag a spot in the line that forms at the base of the Gondola. Spectators are also encouraged to dress in colourful attire - neon retro ski apparel the way to go.
